President

Alejandra Paniagua-Ávila

physician and global mental-health researcher

General physician and global mental-health researcher with a doctorate in public health and epidemiology. Leads research projects that improve mental-health care in Guatemala and in low- and middle-income countries. Advocates for making mental health a priority of the health system and believes that families, communities, and institutions can support recovery with adequate information and resources.

Claudia Castro
Vice president

Claudia Castro

clinical psychologist and co-founder of Lúdica

Clinical psychologist and co-founder of Lúdica specialized in the treatment of children, adolescents, and severe pathologies. Combines clinical practice with university teaching and professional supervision. Seeks to contribute through programs that integrate clinical and community experience to support mental-health recovery and well-being.

Michelle Pieters Arroyo

Michelle Pieters Arroyo

global-health researcher

Global-health researcher with ten years of experience in reproductive health, water and sanitation, and community mental health. Designs projects in collaboration with rural and indigenous communities in Guatemala and the region. She is convinced that research done well, in dialogue with those who live each reality, opens paths toward more just health services.

Lawyer specialized in international economic law, regional integration, and cooperation. Supports the legal, financial, and governance aspects of the association, ensuring that care is sustained by structure. Believes that institutional solidity is the foundation that allows mental-health programs to endure and grow over time.

Diego Sapalú

facilitator, researcher, and community leader

Tz'utujil facilitator, researcher, and community leader. His work centers on participatory action research and community mental health. From Santiago Atitlán he accompanies training, listening, and co-design processes with communities. He is convinced that mental-health care is built with respect for local knowledge and in alliance with the people who inhabit each territory.

Karla Paniagua Ávila

research assistant and lived-experience leader

Research assistant with personal experience living with mental-health conditions. Brings an integrative perspective that informs the association's commitment to centering the voice of those who live with emotional suffering. Believes that people with lived experience must have a place in every decision that affects them.
