Research Team.

Our research team is interdisciplinary and is made up of physicians, psychologists, anthropologists, and researchers who bring scientific, methodological, and practical experience. We also integrate community leaders and people with lived experience of mental-health conditions, which allows us to design collaborative and culturally adapted programs.

Alejandra Paniagua-Ávila

physician and global mental-health researcher

General physician and global mental-health researcher with a doctorate in public health and epidemiology from Columbia University. Defines research areas, leads studies, and articulates international academic alliances. She is motivated by investigating and creating quality, low-cost solutions for mental-health conditions in Guatemala and other low- and middle-income countries.

Michelle Pieters Arroyo
Research Coordinator

Michelle Pieters Arroyo

anthropologist and global-health researcher

Anthropologist and global-health researcher with ten years of experience in reproductive health, water and sanitation, and community mental health. Coordinates research activities, field protocols, and the relationship with communities. She is inspired by learning from people and families and discovering how research supports recovery processes.

Tz'utujil facilitator, researcher, and community leader with experience in participatory action research, data collection, and program implementation. Motivated by creating respectful spaces of dialogue for the co-production of interdisciplinary, intercultural knowledge — where local wisdom carries the same weight as clinical evidence.

Research assistant who participates in projects and data analysis, bringing the unique perspective of her lived experience with mental-health conditions. She enjoys working to find deep solutions that defend dignity and real recovery. Her voice helps the team stay focused on who each study ultimately serves.

Tz'utujil pedagogue, communicator, and community leader. Carries out transcriptions and translations, and supports research and community-communication tasks. Motivated by accompanying people going through mental-health difficulties and bridging the languages and forms of knowledge that coexist in each territory.
