History

History of the Association.

At FUNDAMENTAL we have lived first-hand how mental health is often ignored. This is the story of why we exist and where we started.

At FUNDAMENTAL we have lived first-hand how mental health is often ignored. People with depression, anxiety, or schizophrenia face suffering, isolation, inadequate treatments, and stigma, while their families lack support.

At FUNDAMENTAL we believe recovery is possible. We know first-hand how hard it is to live with these conditions. We also know that people who receive treatment, accompaniment, and understanding can recover. With support, education, and opportunity, each person can improve their autonomy, rebuild their well-being, and participate fully in the life of their family and community.

We started in Santiago Atitlán, Sololá. A community with great needs but also with strong interest and willingness to improve mental health.

Looking ahead. FUNDAMENTAL's goal is to replicate what we learn in Santiago Atitlán in other communities through alliances and capacity-building with leaders and organizations.
